For Fun and Profit?

In the land of Indie Authors and other independent creators, exhibitions and conventions become a way of life. However, the question always arises – Is it all for fun or profit? Reasonably, most people know it’s both. The two aspects feed off of each other. A horrible, disorganized event can scare away attendees and there goes your profit. Yet, the reverse is not automatically true: a fun, well-run event still doesn’t mean you’ll make a profit. But what a time you’ll have in the meanwhile. That’s kind of how the first Fantasy Forum unfolded for me. I know some of the authors sold a lot of books. Me, not so much. Sure had fun otherwise, though.

This, of course, begs the question, does a creative person continue doing such shows? My initial answer is – yes! At least, for a certain amount of tries. A spot/table isn’t cheap but personal connection is hands-down the best way to find your readers. Personally, I’ve sold many more books by such means than through online platforms. However, realistically, there’s only so many shows and/or book signings you can do; it’s not just cost but the physical challenges, as well. Not to forget, almost every indie author is working a ‘day job’, too.

But, I’m not wanting to sound like a whiner because I didn’t sell a lot at this one event. I have another Book Fair coming on November 8th, 2025, as an example. I’m committed to continuing. I’ll set up a nice display that showcases my spooky books. I’ll (shudder) talk to people and I’ll put myself and my books out there. It’s definitely been fun. I met and spoke with many indie authors, marvelled at some of the amazing creativity of the artisans and enjoyed the “Paint and Sip” workshop held by Wilderland Paper. See the images below for how that went.

Had to add a castle to such a scene.
Of course, what’s a fantasy landscape without dragons!

In short, so far the fun and potential for profit outweighs the risk of exhibiting at events like Fantasy Forum. It was an impressively organized and friendly event. They’re already lining up another one in 2026 and I have to say, I plan to be there. I haven’t decided as an exhibitor or attendee but I will decide soon. For now, as an example of another promotion I’m engaged in, September 30th, 2025 is the order deadline for Club Fantamance. Readers were able to choose from 50+ indie fantasy/romantasy authors as a part of special book box. So, the hustle and the journey continues. FEATURE DESIGN OF THE MONTH

You walk down a lonely, country road at midnight (at Halloween no less) and come to a crossroads. A strange, black dog sits nearby. It is a Gytrash, a magical creature with a dubious reputation. Sometimes they guide lost travellers back to the right path. Other times they will lure the unwary person to be lost in the wilderness forever. If you offer the proper respect you’ll be safe.

With the right attitude, you can call on the Gytrash’s power for yourself when you order one of the cool products featuring them from our Redbubble Shop.
