I love Autumn. I love the warmish days, the coolish nights, the beautiful colours and the deepening sense of reflection the season inspires. Halloween is now past and the days are easing into winter with an irresistible slide. I have continued to work on my Witch’s Foundling spin-off series. It’s been a bit of a struggle with sessions of staring at a blank screen with no words coming. This is where the period of ‘reflection’ comes in handy. During these times, creative dryness can lead to thoughts of quitting or questioning whether the struggle is worth it. Just to be clear, I’m still working on my stories.
The Light Seekers series (working title – feel free to tell me what you think) is different in tone from The Witch’s Foundling. For one, it’s told in the third person and bounces between three main characters. There’s plenty of monsters and supernatural action with hints of gothic horror and some slow-burn romance. If you read Book One of The Witch’s Foundling series, you’ll know which characters are involved in the romance. The books are more episodic in structure, with a different paranormal mystery/threat faced in each one. All within a gritty, Dickensian setting. I wonder whether I can pull it off. See, where the reflection comes in?

I love these characters and I want to tell their stories in a manner most engaging for readers. Otherwise, why would anyone stick around? That’s the challenge every creative person faces. It’s never a one-time event either. I’ve found these struggles to be cyclical. Getting ‘stuck’ usually arrives at a time when a break or creative rest is needed. I can resist taking those breaks though; they come with a lot of “non-productive guilt”. There are rather too many ‘writers’ out there who never write anything but only talk about it. Though I can confidently say I am not one of those, the dread of ideas drying up is every author’s fear.
All this, is to say I’m doing new work but progress is slower than I’d like. It’s a different feel than when I wrote The Witch’s Foundling and I’m working out the new kinks involved. However, while it’s been frustrating, there’s definitely been some satisfaction, too. I’m learning and growing as a writer. I hope you will stick by me on this creative journey. I’ll make sure it’s as entertaining as it can be.
I’ll be at the Tales and Treasures Book and Craft Fair, Saturday, November 8, 2025, 10 am to 4 pm, Westview Baptist Church, 1000 Wonderland Rd. S, London, Ontario selling copies of The Witch’s Foundling series alongside other indie authors and artisans. The last one I attended in March 2025 was a blast. That special gift-giving season is approaching – get a head-start and support your local authors and artisans!
